How GST works

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a broad 10% tax on most goods and services in Australia. To add GST, multiply the price by 1.1. To extract the GST contained in a GST-inclusive amount, divide by 11 — for example, a $110 inclusive price contains $10 of GST and $100 net.

Only GST-registered businesses charge GST, and they claim back the GST on their own purchases (input tax credits) through their Business Activity Statement (BAS). Registration is compulsory once annual turnover reaches $75,000. Many essentials — basic food, most health, medical and education services — are GST-free, and exports are generally zero-rated.
